She whispers a quiet Robert under her breath when she sees him enter the room. His coat is drawn up around his neck, blocking the cool New England air and he’s dressed all in black. Perfect for the occasion. He doesn’t see her at first, but she makes no move to hide from him. He catches her eye after just a moment and his face hardens.
“I didn’t think you’d come,” she says, never taking her eyes from him.
“He was my friend, too, Nora.”

“Who is that?” Rob asked, squinting his eyes to take in the form down river. Despite the cool air, the woman was wearing shorts and a bathing suit top, mindful of the sun.
Peter followed the Rob’s line of vision and then frowned. “That’s my niece. Nora.” He glared at the back of Rob’s head, the crease in his brow deepening. “Don’t even think about it.”
